Meet the Koalas: Why Crunching Koalas?

Some claim that naming a game development studio is not supposed to be an easy task.

We disagree, the name should always come naturally, as long as you are not trying to hide who you really are.

Here are the 4 main reasons why we are called Crunching Koalas.

4. Games For Everyone – Everyone Loves Koalas

Everybody loves Koalas

One of the mission statements for our studio is to make games for all those, who need a break. This includes Casual players, harder core gamers and even non gamers. To put it simply, we want to make games that are designed for everyone.

Since we want our games to be for everyone, we figured that we should put something everybody likes in our studio name.

And Everybody LOVES Koalas.

3. We are passionate about what we do

“Crunch” is a term used in the video game industry to reference working overtime. Nobody likes it, and nobody really wants to do it, but sometimes it’s just unavoidable.

Sometimes we crunch

We are a group of individuals who are truly passionate about the games we design. We want our games to as close to perfection that they can possibility be, but at the same time, we are not industry veterans and tend to underestimate the amount of work involved in these projects. That is when the crunching starts…

We crunch because we want to, not because we have to. As a small independent studio, we thought this was part of ourselves worth sharing.

2. Tree tops – a metaphor for Fantasy Worlds.

Sweet Koala

Koala bears spend most of their time on the tree tops, they come to the ground just to climb another tree.

Wikipedia says: “Koalas spend most of their time on the tree tops, they come to the ground just to climb another tree.

We intend to have all or our games in a fantasy setting. We thought that sitting on the tree tops, high above the ground, was a suitable metaphor for creating imaginary worlds.

Something similar to idioms, such as: “to have your head in the clouds” or “to build castles in the air“.

The latter half of the phrase, “and only come to the ground to climb another tree” represents completing a project and starting a new one.

1. Cheerful games, cheerful pet

The capybara was already used as the patron of Capybara Games

Another mission statement for our studio is to craft cheerful digital entertainment. In order to reflect this in our studio name, we wanted to choose a cheerful animal to be a part of the name.

Koalas were our first choice, though we also thought about using capybaras or pandas. We decided to stick with Koalas, since we feel pandas are a bit over used and capybaras were already in use by another independent gaming studio.

These are the 4 main reasons why we are called Crunching Koalas!
